Tuesday, the founder of the project

I came across this BBC News clip as it was being shown while I was in the gym and was immediately inspired by it.

In light of the obvious tragedy of the Grenfell Tower disaster, a group of its supporters have stitched together a 220 ft patch-work quilt containing beautiful designs, patterns and messages which express their condolences and support for loved ones affected by the disaster. The quilt itself is made entirely from donated materials and is in the dimensions of the tower, but they will continue making it bigger and bigger until they believe justice is served.

Supporters hope that stitching the quilt will help further increase awareness, and the cladding that caused the fire will be removed from all other public buildings in order to prevent it happening again. But more importantly, they hope that the quilt will symbolise justice, which is what supporters and relatives/ loved ones of victims of the fire desperately desire.

Volunteers plan to lay the 220ft quilt out somewhere that members of parliament will see, as they believe that politicians need to do more to care for the damaged community who currently feel neglected.

This shows that fashion and textiles are so much more than just a piece of fabric; they can bring light in darkness and are a way of expressing your emotions while bringing people together, as well as influencing larger societal and political issues.
